Asian Handicap

Asian handicap betting sounds exotic and complicated, but it’s actually one of the most sensible ways to bet on football once you get your head around it. The whole point is eliminating the draw as a possible outcome, which immediately improves your chances from roughly 33% to 50%.

Traditional football betting gives you three options: home win, draw, or away win. Asian handicaps take that pesky draw out of the equation by giving one team a head start or handicap. It’s like evening up a lopsided contest before it even kicks off.

Let’s start with the simplest version. Say Manchester City are playing Luton Town – obviously City are massive favourites. An Asian handicap might give Luton a +1.5 goal start. This means for your bet to win, Luton either need to win the match outright, draw, or lose by just one goal. City backers need their team to win by at least two goals.

The beauty is there’s no draw possibility. If City win 2-0, that becomes 2-1.5 with the handicap, so City backers win. If it finishes 1-0 to City, the handicap makes it 1-1.5, so Luton backers collect. Simple enough when you think about it that way.

Where it gets more interesting is with whole number handicaps. Let’s say Arsenal are given a -1 handicap against Brighton. If Arsenal win 2-0, that’s 1-0 with the handicap – Arsenal backers win. But if Arsenal only win 1-0, the handicap makes it 0-0, which creates a “push” – everyone gets their stakes refunded because it’s technically a dead heat.

Quarter-ball handicaps are where things get properly clever, though they might seem mental at first glance. Take a -0.25 handicap – this is actually splitting your stake between a 0 handicap and a -0.5 handicap. If your team wins, both halves of the bet win. If it’s a draw, you lose half your stake but get half refunded. If your team loses, you lose the lot.

Here’s a real example that happened last season: Liverpool were -0.75 against Wolves, which splits between -0.5 and -1. Liverpool won 1-0, so the -0.5 part won (Liverpool win with half-goal handicap), but the -1 part pushed (1-0 minus 1 equals 0-0). Result: you win half your stake and get half refunded, giving you a decent return but not the full whack.

The quarter and three-quarter handicaps exist to give you the half-win, half-push scenarios. It sounds complicated, but it’s actually protecting you from outright losing in close finishes without robbing you of maximum payouts when everything goes perfectly.

Asian handicaps started out in Indonesia and were a success because they reduced the bookmaker’s margin compared to simple 1X2 betting. With only two outcomes instead of three, the overround tends to be lower, and therefore more value for sophisticated punters.

The key to successful Asian handicap betting is understanding team strengths and likely winning margins. It’s a waste laying -2.5 on Manchester City if they typically score 1-0 wins over dogged defences. Similarly, laying large plus handicaps on favourites can pay if you expect a tight game.

One massive advantage is you can back the better team without needing them to overcome short odds. Instead of backing City at 1/4 to beat a relegation candidate, you might get evens on them winning by two or more goals with a -1.5 handicap.

The terminology can trip people up initially. “Giving” goals means your team starts behind, while “receiving” goals means they get a head start. Once you’ve wrapped your head around that basic concept, the rest follows logically.

Most importantly, Asian handicaps let you bet on competitive matches where the draw is a likely outcome, without having to worry about that third possibility derailing your bet.
