Star Sports Overview
Star Sports is one of the UK’s oldest independent bookmakers. It started in 1999 as Star Racing, an on-course and telephone betting specialist, became Star Sports in 2009 and went online in 2018.
It’s owned by Ben Keith, trading as Star Racing Ltd from Hove in East Sussex, and holds both remote and non-remote Gambling Commission licences under account 9177.

What it doesn’t have is the polish of a mass-market brand — no live chat, no e-wallets, and a promotions page that stays fairly quiet. This is a bookmaker built for regular punters rather than bonus hunters.
Is Star Sports Safe? Licence and Regulatory Record
Star Sports is operated by Star Racing Ltd under UK Gambling Commission licence 9177, covering both online and on-course betting. UK consumer protections and advertising rules apply, and IBAS handles disputes.
The site uses TLS 1.2/1.3 encryption via Cloudflare, offers optional two-factor authentication and runs standard identity checks. It’s registered with GAMSTOP, with deposit limits, reality checks, play breaks and self-exclusion available.
Regulatory record — one UK enforcement action
£594,000, plus an official warning and additional conditions attached to the licence. The Gambling Commission penalised Star Racing Ltd, trading as Star Sports, over anti-money-laundering and social responsibility failings between March 2020 and May 2021.
The findings included ineffective AML policies, procedures and controls; allowing customers to deposit large sums before source-of-funds information was obtained; and failing to analyse that information properly once it had been.
A note on how we checked. The Commission’s public register currently shows no actions against account 9177, but the register does not appear to retain older entries indefinitely — an empty register page is not proof of a clean history. This penalty is a matter of public record and was widely reported, including by the Racing Post.
Context both ways: Star Sports remediated, the licence is held in good standing and there has been no repeat. But an official warning and extra licence conditions are more than a formality. Last checked 25 August 2026.
