Sportsbook vs betting exchange
Most bookmakers on this page are traditional sportsbooks — you bet against the bookmaker at odds they set, and they take a margin. Betting exchanges such as Betfair and Matchbook work differently: you bet against other customers, and the exchange takes a small commission on winning bets.
This peer-to-peer model typically produces better odds, particularly in popular markets. Exchanges also let you lay a selection (back it to lose) and trade positions in-play — strategies not available with a standard bookmaker.
The trade-off is a slightly steeper learning curve and the need for liquidity in less popular markets. If you’re serious about value, holding accounts at both a sportsbook and an exchange is worth considering.
The practical difference — a sportsbook is a counterparty with a margin to protect; an exchange is a marketplace taking a cut.
