Twenty-four clubs, 46 matches, and the widest gap between budget and league position anywhere in English football. League One rewards anyone willing to do the work the market has not, because far less money is watching it.
Why League One prices move slowly
Bookmakers price the Premier League with armies of traders and models. They price League One with far fewer, and they adjust more slowly when something changes. A manager sacked on a Monday is priced into the top flight by Tuesday morning. Down here it can take a fortnight.
That lag is the opportunity. It also cuts the other way: liquidity is thin, limits are lower, and a single injury to a first-choice striker moves a line further than it would above. Read team news before you read the price.
Home advantage counts for more here than in either division above. Travel is longer, squads are smaller, and pitch quality varies more between grounds in February. Every club page on this site splits its record by venue for exactly that reason, calculated separately rather than averaged into one misleading number.
Four go down, three go up
The top two are promoted automatically to the Championship. Third to sixth contest the play-offs, with the final at Wembley deciding the last place.
At the other end, four clubs drop into League Two. That is one more than the divisions above and it changes the shape of the relegation market: the bottom eight stay involved deep into spring, and prices on clubs sitting 18th or 19th at Christmas are frequently too long.
What the table does not tell you
Squad depth decides more here than anywhere. Clubs carrying eighteen senior professionals through a 46-game season plus cup replays run out of players by March, and the drop-off arrives suddenly rather than gradually. Watch minutes, not just results.
Loan players distort form badly. A side carrying three good loanees from Premier League academies can look like a promotion contender until January, when recalls and expiries reshape the squad overnight. Judge a League One team on what it will field in April, not what it fielded in September.
Form over six matches is the window we use across this site. In a division this volatile, anything shorter is noise, and no percentage on these pages is quoted from fewer than six games.
Where the value tends to sit
Goals markets drift through the winter programme. Heavier pitches and congested fixture lists push totals down, and the under line moves later here than it does in better-funded divisions.
Clubs relegated from the Championship carry reputations the market prices in from August. Some adjust immediately. Others spend half a season learning that nobody in this division gives them time on the ball, and they drift to a fairer price by November.
Newly promoted clubs from League Two get underpriced in August almost every year. The market has the least data on them of anyone, and it shows in how far their odds swing on small samples.

Common questions
How many clubs are promoted from League One?
Three. The top two go up automatically to the Championship, and the play-off winner takes the third place.
How many clubs are relegated from League One?
Four, into League Two. That is more than the divisions above, which keeps the relegation market live far longer.
How long is a League One season?
Forty-six matches per club, from early August to early May, with the play-offs finishing later in May.
Are there free bets for League One matches?
Yes, though markets are thinner than in the top two divisions and some bookmakers price fewer options. Current welcome offers sit on our free bets and offers page with the full qualifying terms. Check the minimum odds requirement before placing a qualifying bet.
