How to Use the Bookmaker Margin Calculator
This calculator works for any sport and any market type. Here is how to get your results in under a minute:
- Step 1 — Choose your odds format. Toggle between Decimal (e.g. 2.10) and Fractional (e.g. 11/10). Decimal is recommended as it produces more precise results — use our odds converter if you only have fractional prices to hand.
- Step 2 — Select your market type. Choose 2-Way (tennis, basketball, head-to-head), 3-Way (football match result) or Custom if you want to enter more outcomes such as a six-runner horse race or an outright market.
- Step 3 — Enter the odds for every outcome. Type the bookmaker’s advertised odds for each possible outcome. Every outcome must be included for an accurate margin figure — leaving one out will understate the overround.

What Is the Bookmaker Margin (Overround)?
Every set of betting odds includes an invisible profit margin built in by the bookmaker. In a perfectly fair market, the implied probabilities of all outcomes would add up to exactly 100%. In practice they always sum to more than 100% — the excess is the bookmaker’s margin, also called the overround, vig (short for vigorish) or juice.
Here is a simple illustration. Flip a fair coin: the true probability of heads is 50% and tails is 50%. A fair market would price both at 2.00 (Evens). A bookmaker pricing this same market might offer 1.90 on both sides. The implied probability of each side at 1.90 is 52.63%, making the total 105.26% — a 5.26% margin built in. The Bookmaker Margin Formula
Calculating the margin manually requires two steps:
- Step 1: For each outcome, calculate the implied probability: 1 ÷ Decimal Odds × 100. So decimal odds of 2.10 imply a 47.62% chance; odds of 3.40 imply 29.41%; odds of 3.50 imply 28.57%.
- Step 2: Sum all implied probabilities. In our football example: 47.62 + 29.41 + 28.57 = 105.60%. The margin is 105.60 − 100 = 5.60%.

Typical Bookmaker Margins in the UK
Margins vary significantly between bookmakers, sports and market types. Use the following as a general guide:
- Under 2%: Excellent — typically found on betting exchanges (Betfair, Smarkets, Matchbook) or the most competitive odds at major bookmakers on flagship markets.
- 2–4%: Very good — major bookmakers on high-liquidity markets such as Premier League match result or Grand National win market.
- 4–7%: Average — standard pricing across most UK bookmakers on popular sports and markets.
- 7–12%: High — less popular leagues, in-play markets, prop bets and specialty markets where bookmakers manage risk conservatively.
- 12%+: Very high — niche markets, complex specials, and markets with limited liquidity. Avoid if alternatives exist.
Why Does the Margin Matter for Your Betting?
The bookmaker margin is the single most important structural factor in your long-term betting results. Even a small difference in margin per bet compounds to a very large difference over hundreds of bets. At a 5% margin, you would expect to receive back £95 for every £100 wagered over the long run. At a 10% margin, that drops to £90. Over a year of regular betting, that 5 percentage point difference can amount to hundreds of pounds.
The margin also interacts critically with accumulator betting. Because accumulator returns compound the odds of each leg, the bookmaker margin compounds too. A five-fold accumulator where each leg has a 5% margin doesn’t have a 5% total margin — the effective margin across the whole bet is approximately 23%. How to Calculate Fair (No-Vig) Odds
Once you know the total implied probability (e.g. 105.60%), you can calculate the fair odds for each outcome in three steps:
- Step 1: Divide each outcome’s implied probability by the total: 47.62 ÷ 105.60 = 45.09% fair probability for home win; 29.41 ÷ 105.60 = 27.85% for draw; 28.57 ÷ 105.60 = 27.06% for away win.
- Step 2: Convert each fair probability to decimal odds: 1 ÷ 0.4509 = 2.22 for the home win; 1 ÷ 0.2785 = 3.59 for the draw; 1 ÷ 0.2706 = 3.70 for the away win.
- Step 3: Compare the bookmaker’s advertised odds to the fair odds. Any selection where the bookmaker is offering better than fair odds is a positive expected value bet.

How Bookmakers Apply the Margin
Not all bookmakers apply margin in the same way. The three most common approaches are:
- Proportional (symmetric) margin: Margin is applied equally across all outcomes. The most common method and the assumption used in our calculator. Each outcome’s true probability is inflated by the same factor.
- Favourite–longshot bias: More margin is applied to longer-priced selections, less to favourites. This means longshots are systematically overpriced by the bookmaker relative to their true probability. It is most pronounced in horse racing and football accumulators. The implication: shorter-priced selections often represent better value than longer-priced ones at the same bookmaker.
- Outcome-specific loading: Some bookmakers load more margin onto specific outcomes — for example, the draw in football is commonly overpriced relative to the win and lose options. Identifying which outcomes carry disproportionate margin is the basis of many professional betting approaches.
Betting Exchanges vs Bookmakers: The Margin Comparison
Betting exchanges work differently from traditional bookmakers. Instead of setting odds themselves, exchanges match bettors against each other — one person backs a selection, another lays it. The exchange charges commission (typically 2–5%) on net winnings rather than embedding a margin in the odds. The result is that exchange odds frequently sit much closer to fair value than bookmaker prices, particularly on popular markets.
For a typical Premier League match, a bookmaker might price the three-way market at 106% total implied probability (6% margin). The same event on Betfair might trade at 101–102% (1–2% effective margin before commission). Over a large number of bets, this difference is highly significant. Operators like Matchbook charge as little as 1.5–2% commission, making them among the lowest-cost betting venues available to UK bettors.
The key limitation of exchanges is liquidity — for very long-priced selections, unusual markets or small-field events, there may not be enough matching money available at the price you want. Bookmakers offer the convenience of instant guaranteed liquidity at any advertised price.
Using Margin Analysis to Find Value Bets
Once you have calculated the fair odds on a market, you have a benchmark. Any bookmaker offering odds above the fair price on a given selection is offering you positive expected value on that outcome. This is the foundation of value betting — not backing winners, but consistently backing outcomes at prices above their true probability.
In practice, true value betting requires that your probability estimates are more accurate than the bookmaker’s implied probabilities. Simply stripping the margin reveals the bookmaker’s estimate of probability; whether that estimate is accurate is a separate question. Questions
The bookmaker margin — also called the overround, vig or juice — is the profit percentage embedded into betting odds. In a fair market the implied probabilities of all outcomes sum to exactly 100%. Bookmakers inflate this total above 100%; the excess is their margin. A market totalling 106% implied probability carries a 6% overround.
For each outcome, divide 1 by the decimal odds to get the implied probability. Sum all implied probabilities. The total above 1.00 (or 100%) is the margin. For example: Home 2.10 (47.62%) + Draw 3.40 (29.41%) + Away 3.50 (28.57%) = 105.60% total, so margin = 5.60%. Our calculator does this automatically.
Under 2% is excellent (typically exchanges or flagship markets at very competitive bookmakers). 2–4% is good for regular sports betting. 4–7% is average across UK bookmakers on popular markets. Above 10% represents poor value and should be avoided if alternatives exist.
Betting exchanges do not embed a margin in the odds, but they charge commission on net winnings — typically 2–5% depending on the exchange and your account status. This often makes exchanges better value than traditional bookmakers, particularly for frequently-traded markets. Matchbook and Smarkets typically charge the lowest rates at 1.5–2%.
Margins compound across every leg of an accumulator. A four-fold where each leg has a 5% margin doesn’t have a 5% effective margin — it compounds to approximately 19%. The favourite-longshot bias is a well-documented tendency for bookmakers to apply disproportionately high margins to longer-priced selections compared to favourites. A 10/1 shot may carry 15–20% margin while an odds-on favourite in the same market carries only 3–5%. This means shorter-priced selections often offer systematically better value than their longer-priced equivalents at the same bookmaker.
