FAQ

What do these betting guides cover?
They cover the parts of betting that apply to every sport: how odds and bookmaker margins work, betting exchanges, staking and bankroll management, value, cash out, and what to do if a bookmaker restricts your account. Sport-specific markets live in the football, horse racing and casino guides.
Where should a beginner start?
Start with betting odds explained, then how to read a betting slip. Those two cover what a price means and what you get back. After that, the overround guide shows how much of every price goes to the bookmaker.
Are betting exchange odds better than bookmaker odds?
Not always. Exchange odds are often bigger on popular markets, but you pay commission on winnings. At 2% commission, exchange odds of 3.10 pay like 3.058, so a bookmaker offering 3.20 on the same bet pays more. Compare the profit after costs, on the same market and rules.
Why do bookmakers restrict betting accounts?
Bookmakers restrict accounts for commercial reasons, such as betting patterns they see as costly, and for ID, payment or safer gambling checks. Gambling Commission data for 2024 found 4.31% of sampled active accounts were restricted in some way. A restriction alone does not mean your balance is lost.
Can a staking plan make betting profitable?
No. A staking plan controls how much you risk on each bet, which helps a budget last, but it cannot turn losing bets into winning ones. Bookmaker prices include a margin that works against you over many bets. Only stake money you can afford to lose.
