Premier League goals, counted
The most common goals line is 2.5. The top bar is this season’s average, the bottom bar is the line. Early in a season the sample is small, so the average swings. Over and under stats

Matches per season is plain maths. Every club plays every other club home and away, so 20 clubs make 20 x 19 = 380 games.

Read the slip
It is five to three on a Saturday and your slip has four teams on it. Here is what each line means, and how four short prices turn into one long one.
- A
- Selection. What you are backing. Here it is a team to win its match.
- B
- Market. The question the bet answers. Match result is settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties do not count.
- C
- Price. The fraction is the UK format. 4/5 means £4 profit for every £5 staked. The decimal under it is the same price with your stake included.
- D
- Bet type. A four-fold accumulator is one bet on four results. All four must win. If one loses, the whole bet loses.
- E
- Stake. What the bet costs. A £10 four-fold is one bet, so it costs £10.
- F
- Returns. Your stake times the combined decimal odds. That is £10 x 13.50 = £135.00, and it includes your £10 back.
Decimal odds multiply
2.00 x 1.80 x 2.50 x 1.50 = 13.50
The chance figures are the ones the prices imply. Prices include the bookmaker’s margin, so the true chance is lower still.
The settlement catch. If one match is postponed, most bookmakers void that leg and the bet carries on as a treble at shorter odds. Rules differ, so read ours on abandoned and postponed matches before kick-off.
Work it out first
An accumulator pays more because it wins less often. Put your prices in and see both numbers before you bet.
Accumulator returns
Two to six legs, fractional odds. Every leg has to win.
Combined odds 13.50 in decimal, or about 12.5/1. A win returns £135.00, which is £125.00 profit. If any one of the 4 legs loses, you lose the £10.00 stake.
Overround, 1X2
Put in the home, draw and away prices. The three chances add up to more than 100%. The extra is the bookmaker’s margin.
The book adds up to 107.1%. The 7.1 points over 100 are the overround. Back all three results to win £100 and you would stake £107.13.

The markets in one line
Most football bets fall into one of these thirteen markets. Each line tells you what has to happen for the bet to win. Unless a guide says otherwise, bets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
- 1
Match result
Home win, draw or away win after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties do not count.
- 2
Both teams to score
Both sides must score at least once. Who wins the match does not matter.
- 3
Over/under 2.5 goals
Over wins if the match has three goals or more. Under wins with two or fewer.
- 4
Asian handicap
One team starts with a goal head start or a deficit, which removes the draw. Quarter lines split your stake across two handicaps.
- 5
Correct score
You name the exact final score. One goal either way and the bet loses.
- 6
Draw no bet
You back a team to win. If the match ends level, you get your stake back.
- 7
Double chance
You cover two of the three results in one bet. The price is shorter because more outcomes win.
- 8
Half-time/full-time
You name the result at half-time and at full-time. Both parts have to be right.
- 9
Bet builder
Several picks from one match rolled into a single bet. Every pick has to win.
- 10
Anytime goalscorer
Your player has to score at any point in the 90 minutes. Own goals do not count.
- 11
Shots on target
A player or team has to reach a set number of shots on target. Blocked shots do not count.
- 12
Cards
Bets on yellow and red cards, for the match, a team or one player. Counting rules differ between bookmakers.
- 13
Corners
Bets on the number of corners taken, for the match or for one team.
The stats hub
Before you back both teams to score, check how often it has landed. Seven stat tables for each of the six leagues. All of it is free, with no sign-up.
