Grand National Tips 2026: James Mitchell’s Final Selections for Aintree
The field of 34 is confirmed, the going is Good to Soft, and Patrick Mullins has abandoned Nick Rockett for Grangeclare West. James Mitchell’s final Grand National tips for Saturday 11th April at 4pm — updated after declarations.
This tip changed on the morning of declarations and for one reason: Patrick Mullins has chosen to ride Grangeclare West instead of defending champion Nick Rockett.
Patrick Mullins is one of the finest jump jockeys in the world and the son of the trainer. He rode Nick Rockett to victory in last year’s Grand National. When he passes over a horse he has already won this race on in favour of another, it is the strongest possible stable signal. You back that choice.
The form case stacks up independently. Third in 2025 — so he handles Aintree and has already performed at the top level in this race. His prep in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse in February was a decisive victory by five and a half lengths. At 10/1 with Patrick Mullins aboard, this is our win bet.
Won in 2024. Second in 2025. Both from top weight. Paul Townend rides for a third consecutive year. The each-way case is almost impossible to argue against — two consecutive top-two finishes from top weight is a record that speaks for itself.
At 15/2 the win is shorter than ideal in a 34-runner handicap. However, the place is near-certain. At 1/5 the odds for up to 7 places, the each-way return from a place alone is meaningful. This is the each-way banker.
Only squeezed into the field after late withdrawals but arrives in the form of his life. Won the Cheltenham Ultima in March — fresh from a wind operation — beating stablemate Jagwar. Ultima winners have an outstanding recent National record.
JP McManus-owned, trained by the same yard as Iroko and Jagwar. At 16/1 with Paddy Power paying 7 places, the each-way return if he places is excellent. A small each-way stake at this price is well justified.
