How to Calculate Bet Profit
Working out how much you will win from a bet is something every punter needs to do before placing, yet it is surprising how often it causes confusion — particularly when switching between fractional and decimal odds formats. Our bet profit calculator removes all the guesswork and gives you an instant, accurate breakdown of your profit, total return, implied probability and ROI.
Profit vs Total Return — What is the Difference?
These two figures are frequently confused. Your profit is the amount you win above and beyond your original stake. Your total return is the profit plus your stake returned. For example, a £10 bet at odds of 3.50 returns £35.00 in total — made up of £25.00 profit and your original £10 stake back. Most betting sites display total return in the bet slip, while profit is what actually lands in your account above your starting balance.
Calculating Profit from Decimal Odds
Decimal odds are the simplest format for profit calculation. The formula is: Profit = (Decimal Odds − 1) × Stake. Total Return = Decimal Odds × Stake. So at 4.00 on a £20 stake: Profit = 3 × £20 = £60. Total Return = 4 × £20 = £80. Our odds converter translates any odds format to decimal instantly.
Calculating Profit from Fractional Odds
Fractional odds show profit relative to stake. At 5/2, for every £2 staked you win £5 profit. The formula is: Profit = (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × Stake. At 5/2 on a £10 stake: Profit = (5 ÷ 2) × £10 = £25. Total Return = £25 + £10 = £35. Fractional odds remain the dominant format in UK horse racing.
Calculating Profit from American (Moneyline) Odds
American odds work differently for underdogs (positive) and favourites (negative). For positive odds (+250): Profit = (Odds ÷ 100) × Stake. At +250 on a £10 stake: £25 profit, £35 total return. For negative odds (−150): Profit = (100 ÷ |Odds|) × Stake. At −150 on a £10 stake: £6.67 profit, £16.67 total return. UK bettors encounter American odds most commonly on NBA, NFL and other US sports markets.
What is Implied Probability?
Every set of odds implies a probability of that outcome occurring. The formula is: Implied Probability = 1 ÷ Decimal Odds × 100. Odds of 3.50 imply a 28.57% chance of winning — meaning you would expect to lose roughly 7 times in 10 at those odds. Understanding implied probability is the foundation of value betting. If you believe the true probability is higher than the implied figure, the bet represents value. Use this alongside our expected value calculator to assess whether a price is worth taking.
ROI and Bankroll Management
ROI (Return on Investment) expresses your profit as a percentage of your stake. A bet at 3.50 has an ROI of 250% if it wins — meaning you get 2.5 times your stake in profit. Tracking ROI across all your bets over time is one of the most important habits for any serious bettor. Our bankroll management calculator uses your ROI and win rate to help you optimise stake sizes using the Kelly Criterion and percentage staking methods.
Using This Calculator for Accumulator Bets
This calculator is designed for single bets. For accumulator returns where multiple selections multiply together, use our accumulator calculator which handles unlimited legs, each-way, and void runners. For system bets covering multiple combinations, see our Heinz, Yankee, and Lucky 63 calculators.

Questions
For decimal odds: Profit = (Odds − 1) × Stake. For fractional odds (N/D): Profit = (N ÷ D) × Stake. For positive American odds: Profit = (Odds ÷ 100) × Stake. For negative American odds: Profit = (100 ÷ |Odds|) × Stake. Our calculator handles all formats automatically.
Profit is the amount you win above your original stake. Total return is profit plus your stake returned. A £10 bet at 4.00 returns £40 in total (£30 profit + £10 stake). Betting sites usually show total return in the bet slip.
Implied probability is the bookmaker’s estimated percentage chance of an outcome winning, derived directly from the odds. Odds of 2.00 imply a 50% chance. Odds of 4.00 imply a 25% chance. If you believe the true probability is higher than the implied figure, the bet has positive expected value. Use our EV calculator to quantify this.
This calculator works for win-only single bets. For each-way bets, use our each-way calculator which accounts for place terms and calculates both the win and place portions of the return separately.
