What Is a Yankee Bet?
A Yankee is one of the most popular full cover multiple bets in UK racing and football betting. It consists of 11 bets on 4 selections: 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 four-fold accumulator. Unlike a Lucky 15 it contains no singles, meaning at least 2 selections must win before you see any return — but the potential rewards from all four winning are significantly higher.
At a unit stake of £1, a Yankee costs £11 win-only or £22 each-way. Most punters use 25p–50p unit stakes, giving a total outlay of £2.75–£5.50 win-only. The Yankee’s strength lies in its balance: comprehensive coverage of all multi-selection combinations without the additional cost of singles.
Yankee vs Lucky 15
A Lucky 15 uses the same 4 selections but adds 4 singles, taking the total to 15 bets. This means a Lucky 15 returns something even with just one winner. The Yankee is cheaper (11 bets vs 15) but requires 2 winners to return anything. If you are confident at least 2 of your 4 selections will win, the Yankee is a more cost-effective choice.
Yankee Bet Example
A 50p Yankee on four horses at 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 decimal. Total outlay: £5.50. If all four win, the six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold all win. The four-fold alone returns: 3×4×5×6×0.50 = £180. Total return across all 11 bets would be substantial. Tips for a Yankee Bet
- 4 selections is the sweet spot: The Yankee gives you 11 bets worth of coverage — far more than a single four-fold — for a fraction of the potential return sacrifice.
- Mix sports: A Yankee covering horse racing, football, and golf selections is a popular Saturday bet in the UK.
- Use free bets: A free bet used as a Yankee unit stake can return significant profit. See our free bet calculator.
