How did Spain win the 2026 World Cup final?

Spain won the 2026 World Cup final 1-0 against Argentina after extra time. Argentina did not manage a single shot in the first 90 minutes. The game was still 0-0 when normal time ended.

Argentina went down to ten men in stoppage time. Enzo Fernández picked up a second yellow card, and VAR backed the referee. Ferran Torres then won it in the 106th minute from a Nico Williams pass.

Emiliano Martínez kept Argentina in the game for a long time. Reports put his saves at 10 or 11, a record for a World Cup final either way. It was not enough to give Lionel Messi a second title.

Luis de la Fuente’s side had already won Euro 2024. Their record across the eight games was seven wins and one draw, the 0-0 with Cape Verde in their first match.

Records That Fell

01

Most goals at a World Cup: 308

The 104 games produced 308 goals, about 2.96 a game. The old record was 172 in 2022, from 64 games. The bigger 48-team format explains most of the jump.

02

Mbappé passes Messi: 22 World Cup goals

Kylian Mbappé ended the tournament on 22 career World Cup goals. Messi has 21. Mbappé is also the first player to win the Golden Boot twice, in 2022 and 2026.

03

Fewest goals conceded by a winner: 1

Spain let in one goal in eight games, against Belgium in the quarter-final. Goalkeeper Unai Simón won the Golden Glove.

04

Biggest crowds: 6.8 million

Total attendance was 6,810,966, an average of 65,490 a game. The old record was 3,587,538 at USA 1994.

05

Six World Cups for Messi and Ronaldo

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo both played at a sixth World Cup. Ronaldo is the only man to score at six. Neither won the trophy: Messi lost the final and Portugal went out in the round of 16.

06

Ten goals in a third-place match

England’s 6-4 win over France was the highest-scoring third-place match ever. It was also Didier Deschamps’ last game as France manager.

When is the next World Cup?

The next World Cup is in 2030. Spain, Portugal and Morocco are the main hosts. Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will each stage one opening game to mark 100 years since the first World Cup in 1930.

We will rebuild our World Cup pages once the draw and fixtures are set. Until then, this page stays as the record of what happened in 2026.
